Here is a little bit of background info that lead me to want to write this blog!
I’ve suffered with my skin on and off for as long as I can remember – it can REALLY dent my confidence during a flare up and I have tried ALL sorts.
Earlier this year, I came off the pill solely to try and level my hormones and be healthier overall but my skin has really had a rough time ever since! Primarily my chin area, signifying hormone issues. Speaking to various girls about it, it seems SO common due to hormonal fluctuations. I have been trying to work out what helps as much as possible. No magic fixes exist but this is one thing that I have genuinely noticed an improvement with.
HOW/WHY IT CLEARED MY SPOTS:
I wouldn’t say that red light masks are marketed specifically to clear up spots HOWEVER it genuinely has helped my skin clear up (not perfect but much better) so I’ve been researching how and why.
I was using heavy products that caused my skin to dry out too much. I took a break from my red light mask for that reason. I then decided to take a break from the heavy products as my skin was so bad, it was just a vicious cycle. It then stopped drying out and I reintroduced my mask – my skin is now the clearest it has been in approximately 4-5 months.
INDIRECT HELP FOR ACNE: (if this isn’t relevant just skip this section for general benefits below)
Increasing collagen production through red light therapy can indirectly help with clearing spots (acne) by improving skin health. Here’s how:
– Boosts Skin Repair: Collagen is essential for skin structure and repair. Red light therapy stimulates collagen production, which can strengthen the skin’s barrier, helping it to heal more efficiently. Stronger, healthier skin is better able to recover from acne and resist future breakouts
– Reduces Inflammation: Red light therapy has anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne. This can make spots less visible and promote faster healing .
– Supports Skin Regeneration: By promoting collagen production, red light therapy can help reduce the appearance of acne scars. More collagen means better skin elasticity and smoother skin texture, which can minimise the impact of past breakouts .
– Regulating Oil Production/Sebum: Red light therapy can help balance sebum (oil) production. Excess oil is a common cause of acne, and by reducing this, the therapy may help prevent future breakouts.
CURRENT BODY:
I have only tried the brand CurrentBody mask but I have outlined the benefits in general. I definitely recommend the model I have and it has an amazing array of positive feedback on their website.
There are plenty to pick from on the market if you want to do your own research and this is not an AD, I don’t work with CurrentBody – it is merely a genuine recommendation for a product I have regularly used for the past year (before my huge breakout issue) and I just massively rate it for all of its other benefits discussed in this blog.
What Exactly is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy (RLT) sounds high-tech, but it’s actually a gentle and non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin. Red light therapy is all about rejuvenation from the inside out. The red light stimulates cells to produce more collagen, increase blood flow, and even reduce inflammation. The goal is firmer, smoother skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles.
The Benefits of Red Light Therapy Mask
- Anti-Aging Superpowers: One of the biggest reasons people turn to red light therapy is for its anti-aging effects. The red and near-infrared light in the CurrentBody mask boosts collagen production, which is the protein responsible for keeping your skin firm and youthful. Over time, this can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving you that fresh, plump skin you’ve been dreaming of.
- Even Skin Tone: Struggling with dark spots or an uneven complexion? Red light therapy can help with that too! By promoting cell turnover, it can fade hyperpigmentation and give you a more even skin tone. Plus, it’s known to calm down redness and inflammation, making it great for those with sensitive skin or conditions like rosacea.
- Boosted Radiance: Regular use of the mask can enhance your skin’s natural radiance, making it look healthier and more vibrant.
- Painless & Convenient: One of the best things about the a mask is how easy it is to incorporate into your daily routine. Unlike some treatments that require you to go to a clinic or spa, this mask is portable, lightweight, and fits right into your schedule. You can use it while watching TV, reading a book, or even just relaxing after a long day. In just 10 minutes a day, you’re giving your skin a boost that it’ll thank you for.
- Safe for Regular Use: Since it’s non-invasive and gentle on the skin, the mask can be used regularly without any downtime. No redness and no peeling. For me, it can cause dry skin if used too often (although not just general use) and I would recommend a maximum of 4-5 days per week.
How to Fit It into Your Daily Routine
- Morning Glow: Start your day with a quick 10-minute session before your morning skincare routine. The light therapy can possibly help your skin absorb your serums and moisturisers more effectively.
- Post-Workout Wind-Down: After a Pilates session or a brisk walk, put on your mask while you cool down. Not only will it give your skin some love, but it’s also a great way to relax your mind and body.
- Evening Relaxation: If you prefer winding down at night, make red light therapy part of your evening self-care ritual. After cleansing, pop on the mask, and let it work its magic while you sip some tea or reading. As I’ve mentioned before my Whoop band (not an AD) shows a positive impact on my ‘recovery score’ for the following day, when I read in bed!

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS:
You can enter full saunas or buy other products that target other areas for example your neck/hairline etc. which CurrentBody also has a great range to pick from.
I’ve put together a bullet point list of benefits associated with red light therapy:
- Promotes Collagen Production: Helps increase collagen levels in the skin, leading to reduced fine lines and wrinkles, and firmer, more youthful-looking skin.
– Improves Skin Tone and Texture: Regular use can lead to smoother, more even skin tone by reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
– Accelerates Healing: Red light therapy can enhance tissue repair and wound healing, making it beneficial for acne scars, cuts, and other skin injuries.
– Reduces Inflammation: Known to help decrease inflammation, which can be beneficial for conditions like acne, rosacea, and general skin redness.
– Enhances Circulation: By improving blood flow to treated areas, it can boost oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin, improving overall skin health.
– Supports Hair Growth: Red light therapy has been shown to promote hair growth in people experiencing hair loss or thinning.
– Boosts Mood: Exposure to red light therapy can also influence mood by boosting serotonin levels, making it a potential aid for those with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
– Reduces Joint and Muscle Pain: It’s often used in physical therapy to alleviate pain and inflammation in joints and muscles, speeding up recovery post-exercise. My beloved Bryony Deery (click here for her Instagram if you want to be a fan girl too!) uses full body saunas and says it helps with her arthritis! Follow her on instagram if you’re in to health inspo and pilates – I’m obsessed with her!
