ADD A CEILING ROSE & FEATURE CEILING LIGHT
A ceiling rose paired with a bold, statement light fixture can instantly elevate your lounge’s aesthetic. Ceiling roses are inexpensive and easy to install, offering a vintage or modern touch depending on your style. Pair this with a large feature light to create a focal point that draws the eye upward, adding elegance and drama to the room.
CREATE CANDLE DISPLAYS WITH BATTERY POWERED LIGHTING
This could be with little candle inspired faux flame pods or strip lighting that you can remote with an App or remote. Recycle jars or used candle pots to create ambient lighting displays. Fill them with battery-powered LED lights or small fairy lights to mimic the warm glow of candles without the risk of open flames. Group them in clusters for an inviting and cozy effect on your coffee table, shelves, or sideboards.
INCORPORATE A BIOFUEL FIRE FEATURE
If you dream of a fireplace but don’t want the expense or hassle of installation, consider a biofuel fire feature. These are low-cost, eco-friendly, and require no electrical or gas connections. They create a warm, inviting atmosphere and make a stunning centre piece for your lounge.
ADD AN ACOUSTIC PANELLING WALL FEATURE
Acoustic panelling is both functional and stylish. They come in sheets and are super easy to install – even for those who are not DIY confident. It enhances sound quality in your lounge and can be used as a striking feature wall. Choose panels in bold colours or subtle textures to suit your theme while adding a layer of sophistication.
ADD EASY-FIT WALLPAPER
You could use wallpaper in the traditional sense if you can do it yourself or budget allows for a decorator. Another easy and affordable way to add personality, opt for peel-and-stick wallpaper. It’s perfect for renters or those who want a temporary change, as it’s easy to remove. Choose patterns, textures, or bold colours to create a stunning accent wall that transforms the room.

PRE-CUT TO SIZE PANELLING KITS
I actually used one of these in the past for the square panel across the full wall feature and it worked a dream! Again, this is an ideal approach for those who are just dipping their toe in to DIY. Panelling adds depth and character to any lounge, and pre-cut kits make it easier than ever. These kits save time and effort, allowing you to achieve a professional look without the need for custom carpentry. Paint the panels in a contrasting colour to make them stand out.
INTRODUCE ARTWORK FOR COLOUR OR SOPHISTICATION
Artwork is a simple way to inject vibrancy and personality into your lounge. Look for affordable prints, thrifted finds, or even create your own DIY pieces. Large-scale art can anchor a wall, while smaller frames can be styled in a gallery layout. You can buy a canvas and create your own – this is what I have done and I absolutely love them! Mix it up by buying some and creating your own – it’s so lovely to create your own pieces for your home!
ADD BATTERY-POWERED WALL LIGHTING
Add mood lighting without hiring an electrician or damaging decorated walls by using battery-powered wall lights. These are perfect for creating a warm ambiance and can be easily mounted anywhere. Choose stylish sconces or modern fixtures to complement the décor. These can often be operated via Apps or remotes which is such a handy feature!
UPDATE CUSHIONS & ACCESSORIES
Assess what ‘feature’ colour may work in the existing space and swap over the cushions and pick a few complementary accessories to incorporate it all together. You can save money by buying cushion covers and just putting them on your existing ones – huge money saver! Switch out old cushions and accessories for pieces in bold, vibrant colours or trendy patterns to refresh the room’s look instantly. This affordable change can completely transform the mood and feel of your lounge. Feather cushions look the nicest but can be super pricey so opt for lower cost filled alternatives if you are on a budget!
ADD LAYERS WITH A RUG
A rug not only anchors the seating area but also adds texture and warmth to the room. Choose a design that complements your new colour scheme and layer it under your coffee table or seating area for a cozy vibe.
SOFA COVERS
If your sofa feels dated or doesn’t match your vision, a sofa cover is a budget-friendly solution. Available in various colours and patterns, it’s a quick fix to make your lounge feel brand new. It will feel like an entirely new sofa for a fraction of the price!

ADD TABLE & FLOOR LAMPS FOR VARIABLE LIGHTING
I personally hate ‘the big light’ so lamps and wall lights are the way forward to me. They also really add a beautiful vibe to the space as well as a nicer ambience. Lamps create a soft and cozy atmosphere, perfect for evenings. Position them strategically around the room to highlight features or provide task lighting. Opt for modern or vintage designs to tie in with your theme. Check charity shops too!
CHARITY SHOPS
Following on from my last point – I’ve added this as it’s own bonus tip. Don’t be embarrassed at buying second hand – it’s nothing other than spend savvy!! You can get ALL sorts for a bargain price when it is pre-owned. Don’t rule it out!
ADD A STYLED COFFEE TABLE
A coffee table can become a real focal point with the right styling. Use a tray to organise items like candles, coffee table books, and decorative objects. Group items in odd numbers for a balanced, visually appealing look. You can get a coffee table for a really decent price nowadays so have a browse! This would especially be a good addition with a new rug!
ADD MIRRORS
Adding mirrors to a space is so underestimated in how much it can transform a room. They can enhance the spacing as well as the lighting – game changer! You can also pick the colours accordingly for your ‘new vibe’ Mirrors are an excellent way to make your lounge appear larger and brighter. Position a decorative mirror opposite a window to reflect natural light or use smaller, grouped mirrors for a stylish gallery effect. Another option is to ‘paint/spray’ the framework of your existing mirrors – great DIY hack.
REVAMP FURNITURE
This can be with your existing furniture or a good spot on Facebook marketplace that you can up-cycle.
Give tired furniture a new lease on life with a fresh coat of paint or adhesive wraps. For example:
– Paint wooden side tables, shelves, or cabinets in a bold accent colour to complement your theme.
– Use adhesive vinyl wraps to update surfaces like coffee tables or TV stands with trendy patterns or textures like marble or wood grain.
There’s lots of videos on YouTube to help your up-cycle/DIY journey!
By implementing these affordable ideas, you can give your lounge a complete makeover without stretching your budget. These tips allow you to customise your space, add personality, and create a room that feels both stylish and welcoming. It’s also actually super rewarding when you use your DIY skills to transform or create something yourself – as well as being a big money saver!
Start with one or two changes and build from there—your dream lounge is closer than you think! Give it a go!
